The Rwanda National Police has destroyed illicit drugs and prohibited goods valued at more than Rwf 61.7 million, seized from individuals involved in illegal trade across different parts of Kigali City.
The destroyed items included 352 kilograms of cannabis, 1,203 litres of kanyanga alcohol, various types of substandard locally brewed drinks, food and beverages, as well as skin-lightening products commonly known as Mukorogo.
The destruction exercise was carried out in Nduba in collaboration with local authorities, the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), the National Public Prosecution Authority, and members of the public.
Police spokesperson for Kigali City, CIP Wellars Gahonzire, said the items were confiscated from different police stations across the city following intelligence provided by residents.
He noted that suspects linked to the seized goods have been processed and handed over to judicial authorities.
Police commended members of the public for providing timely information that led to the interception of the illegal products before they reached consumers, urging continued vigilance and cooperation.
Authorities also warned against involvement in the trafficking and sale of illicit substances, stressing that such offences are punishable under Rwandan law, including lengthy prison sentences.
