Rwanda could have four representatives at the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup after the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) revealed that efforts are underway to secure additional slots for Kiyovu Sports and Police FC.
The announcement was made by FERWAFA President Fabrice Shema during an Extraordinary General Assembly held on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
The regional tournament is scheduled to take place in Rwanda from July 18 to August 9, 2026, with champions APR FC and runners-up Rayon Sports already confirmed as the country’s representatives following their top-two finish in the Rwanda Premier League.
However, FERWAFA is seeking approval to include Kiyovu Sports and Police FC, which also enjoyed strong campaigns during the recently concluded season.
“We are requesting that Police FC and Kiyovu Sports be added,” Shema told delegates during the assembly.
If approved, the move would boost Rwanda’s representation at one of East and Central Africa’s most prestigious club competitions and provide more local teams with an opportunity to compete at regional level.
The CECAFA Kagame Cup is one of four major CECAFA competitions that Rwanda will host in 2026, underscoring the country’s growing role as a regional sports hub.
In addition to the Kagame Cup, Rwanda will host the CECAFA Zone qualifiers for the African Schools Football Championship from July 22-25, the CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers from August 22 to September 6, and the CECAFA qualifiers for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations between October 10 and 25.
The last time Rwanda hosted CECAFA club competition matches was in 2020.
