MIGEPROF calls for stronger communication to build safe and resilient families

The Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion (MIGEPROF) has called on Rwandans to strengthen communication within households as a key step toward building stable, safe and resilient families.

The appeal was made during the commemoration of the International Day of Families, held under the theme “Good communication; the foundation of family wellbeing,” which brought together government officials and development partners working in the family welfare sector.

As part of the event, MIGEPROF convened a national dialogue focused on strengthening family cohesion and addressing persistent challenges affecting households across the country.

Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Uwimana Consolée said the family remains a central pillar of social stability and national development, noting that dialogue is essential to resolving domestic challenges.

She stressed that open communication helps prevent conflicts and strengthens unity within families, adding that unresolved issues often escalate when not discussed constructively.

The Minister also cautioned against the growing trend of sharing family disputes on social media, warning that public exposure of domestic issues can deepen conflicts and negatively affect children and vulnerable family members.

Rwanda continues to place the family at the core of its development agenda, with constitutional provisions recognising it as the fundamental unit of society and safeguarding it through policies and legal frameworks.

However, recent findings indicate that family-related challenges remain significant. A 2025 Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) survey identified domestic conflicts as one of the leading issues affecting households nationwide.

The study also highlighted related concerns including domestic violence, infidelity, teenage pregnancies, child neglect, school dropout, and child malnutrition.

Contributing factors cited include alcohol abuse, limited family dialogue, poor financial management, and gaps in understanding gender equality principles.
