The Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement, Dr. Jean Damascène Bizimana, has commended author Yolande Mukagasana for her courage in documenting the history of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and its enduring impact on Rwandan families through her book Umurage w’Urubyiruko (The Legacy of Youth).

Dr. Bizimana made the remarks on Monday evening, February 9, 2026, during the book launch held at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi.

Umurage w’Urubyiruko – Part One focuses on explaining to Rwandans, particularly young people, the origins, execution, and consequences of the Genocide against the Tutsi, and its lasting effects on the nation.

In his address, the minister said he read the book and wrote its foreword, praising Mukagasana for choosing to record the genocide’s history despite the personal tragedy of losing her husband and all her children during the Genocide.

He also highlighted her commitment to reconciliation and social responsibility, noting her decision to care for vulnerable street children, raise them without discrimination, and instill in them values of unity and patriotism.

Dr. Bizimana further addressed the roots of genocide ideology, warning against narratives that replace national identity with ethnic divisions and embed exclusionary beliefs in leadership and governance—factors that contributed to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

He urged educators to remain vigilant against genocide denial and minimisation, including attempts by individuals who falsely claim survivor status or human rights advocacy to conceal their families’ involvement in the Genocide.

The minister called on the public to support Mukagasana and other writers in preserving Rwanda’s history and contributing to national unity and development.

Speaking at the event, Mukagasana said the book targets a broad audience, especially young people with limited knowledge of the country’s past, as well as older generations who experienced the events firsthand.

She emphasised the importance of truth-telling and patriotism among the youth, encouraging them to uphold values of national unity and love for the country.

The event also provided a platform for young participants to reflect on the significance of Ndi Umunyarwanda, express their commitment to unity, and reaffirm their resolve to follow the example of the FPR Inkotanyi youth who played a key role in stopping the Genocide against the Tutsi and rebuilding the nation.
