Rwanda’s Minister of Defence, Juvenal Marizamunda, on Friday joined regional military leaders at the official closing ceremony of the East African Community joint military exercise, USHIRIKIANO IMARA 2026, held in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Rwandan delegation also included Maj. Gen. Alex Kagame, Chief of Reserve Forces.

The exercise aimed at strengthening regional peace, security, and resilience through joint training involving military personnel, police officers, and civilian partners from East African Community member states.

The drills focused on enhancing coordination and interoperability among security institutions in responding to emerging regional security threats and complex security challenges.

Participants included defence and security forces from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania, while the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and South Sudan attended as observers.

The exercise, which began on May 6, 2026, was officially closed by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Roselinda Soipan Tuya.

On the sidelines of the event, Minister Marizamunda held bilateral talks with his Kenyan counterpart, where discussions focused on further strengthening the longstanding defence cooperation between Rwanda and Kenya.
