Gasabo, Kigali – October 9, 2025 — In a strong show of commitment to Rwanda’s vision for nurturing a knowledge-based and inclusive society, Mount Kigali University has donated Rwf 150 million to the Imbuto Foundation to support the construction of the Murama Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Kinyinya Sector, Gasabo District.
The donation was officially handed over by Prof. Simon Gicharu, Founder of Mount Kigali University, to Ms. Elodie Shami, Director General of Imbuto Foundation, during a foundation stone-laying ceremony held at the site. The event marked a significant milestone in strengthening partnerships between the education sector, private institutions, and civil society in advancing early childhood development in Rwanda.
Prof. Gicharu emphasized the importance of investing in children at the earliest stages of life, noting that “a strong foundation in the first years determines the quality of education and the kind of citizens we raise.” He commended Imbuto Foundation for its continued leadership in promoting holistic child development through community-based ECD centers across the country.
The Murama ECD Centre will provide a safe and stimulating learning environment for children aged 3 to 6 years, while also offering parenting and nutrition education to families. It will serve as a model center promoting integrated services that include early learning, health, hygiene, and nutrition — all critical to ensuring every Rwandan child reaches their full potential.
Early Childhood Development remains a national priority under Rwanda’s National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), recognizing that cognitive, emotional, and physical growth during early years lays the groundwork for lifelong learning and productivity. Through ECD centers, children are equipped with foundational skills that improve school readiness, while parents and caregivers receive the support they need to nurture their children effectively.
Over the years, Imbuto Foundation, under the leadership of the First Lady of Rwanda, H.E. Jeannette Kagame, has championed initiatives that empower families and communities to support children’s growth and education. The Foundation has established and supported dozens of ECD centers across the country, reaching thousands of children with quality care, nutrition, and early learning opportunities.
The Murama ECD Centre, developed in partnership with Imbuto Foundation, Gasabo District, and other collaborators, reflects Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to ensure every child has access to quality early education, a key step toward achieving the country’s long-term vision of becoming a knowledge-driven and equitable society.
