Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe has congratulated Rwanda’s women’s national volleyball team after it advanced to the semifinals of the African Women’s Volleyball Championship in Nairobi, Kenya.
Rwanda reached the last four after defeating Ghana 3-1 in the quarterfinals, winning 25-17, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-18. The result was confirmed by match records from the tournament.
Nduhungirehe celebrated the team’s performance in a post on X, writing: “Uwambaye u Rwanda araberwa kandi agatsinda! Ni uko ni uko bakobwa bacu.”
The victory followed a strong group-stage campaign in which Rwanda defeated Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi, all by 3-0 margins.
Rwanda will face Egypt in the semifinal after Egypt defeated Tunisia 3-0 in the quarterfinals. The semifinal is scheduled for September 3.
The upcoming meeting will revive the 2023 semifinal between the two teams, when Egypt eliminated Rwanda with a 3-0 victory.
Rwanda’s latest run has put the team among the continent’s final four, with Cameroon also reaching the semifinals after a 3-0 victory over Uganda. Kenya and Algeria are contesting the remaining quarterfinal.
For Rwanda, the semifinal represents another opportunity to challenge for a place in the continental final after a strong start to the championship.
