Nearly all couples who formalised their marriages in 2025 opted for the joint matrimonial property regime, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR).
Out of 50,257 registered marriages, 48,748 couples—representing 97%—chose the joint property regime, making it the overwhelmingly preferred option.
The total number of marriages slightly declined compared to 2024, when 52,878 unions were officially registered.
The “limited community of property” regime ranked second, chosen by 1,233 couples (2.3%), a marginal shift from 1,187 couples (2.4%) the previous year.
Meanwhile, the “separation of property” regime saw a notable increase in uptake, rising from 313 couples (0.6%) in 2024 to 753 couples (1.4%) in 2025.
Pre-nuptial agreements remained extremely rare, with only a negligible number of couples opting for them, recorded at virtually 0%—just nine cases in 2024 and two in 2025.
