NIDA suspends e-ID enrolment photography

The National Identification Agency (NIDA) has temporarily suspended the photography of citizens under the e-National Identity Card (e-ID) programme as it prepares to announce a new schedule and locations for the exercise.

NIDA said citizens who have not yet been photographed for the e-ID will have to wait for the next phase of the exercise, details of which will be communicated later.

The agency said the schedule and locations for photography at sector level will be announced in the coming days and urged citizens to follow official updates from NIDA.

NIDA also advised citizens who need to correct personal information to do so before photography resumes.

The information that may need correction includes a person’s name or parents’ names, place of birth, age, marital status and other personal details.

Those seeking corrections have been advised to visit civil registration officers in their respective sectors to have their records updated.

Although the photography exercise has been suspended, NIDA said pre-enrolment, which involves providing and confirming basic information required to obtain an e-ID, is continuing.

Citizens can complete the pre-enrolment process through the Irembo platform and do not need to wait for the photography exercise to resume to submit or confirm their information.

By August 2026, NIDA said more than seven million people had been photographed for the e-ID programme. The exercise has now reached all districts across the country, while those who missed it will be informed when photography resumes.

The government says the e-ID will make it easier for citizens to access services while giving them greater control over their personal information. Citizens will only be required to provide the information needed for a particular service, rather than presenting an identity card containing all their personal details.
