Rwanda’s Ambassador to Spain, Christine Nkulikiyinka, has presented copies of her credentials to Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, formally taking up her role as Rwanda’s representative in the country.

The ceremony took place in Madrid on Friday, October 2, 2026, marking the establishment of Rwanda’s first resident diplomatic representation in Spain.

The opening of the embassy comes as Rwanda seeks to deepen its engagement across Europe, with particular attention to economic cooperation, tourism, healthcare, agriculture and investment relations with Spain.

Rwanda and Spain have maintained diplomatic relations since 1967. Until now, however, Rwanda’s diplomatic affairs with Spain had been handled through its embassy in Paris, France.

The decision to establish a resident diplomatic mission in Spain is part of Rwanda’s broader efforts to expand its diplomatic presence and strengthen bilateral relations with European countries.

Nkulikiyinka was appointed to the post following diplomatic changes announced by President Paul Kagame on June 10, 2026. She was previously Rwanda’s Minister of Public Service and Labour.

Her appointment makes her the first resident Rwandan ambassador based in Spain, giving Rwanda a permanent diplomatic presence in the country.

The new embassy is expected to provide a stronger platform for advancing bilateral cooperation and supporting engagement between Rwanda and Spain across key sectors.
