A female Senior One student at G.S. Saint Laurent Cyahinda in Cyahinda Sector, Nyaruguru District, is under investigation over allegations of an unsafe abortion and the concealment of fetal remains.
The incident reportedly came to light on June 16, 2026, around midday, although the pregnancy is believed to have been terminated the previous night.
Local authorities say the fetal remains were later discovered after being allegedly wrapped, concealed, and discarded near a bridge close to the family home.
Cyahinda Sector Executive Secretary, Aphrodise Nkurunziza, said the remains indicated a pregnancy of approximately three to four months, adding that the stage of gestation made the pregnancy difficult to detect.
The case was reported by family members, prompting the intervention of authorities. The student is said to have given initial statements acknowledging involvement, while investigations are ongoing.
She reportedly told authorities that she experienced abdominal pain at home before going to the toilet, where she noticed unusual symptoms, claiming she did not understand what had happened and was unaware she was pregnant.
She also alleged that the pregnancy resulted from a sexual assault while she was fetching firewood, an incident she said she did not report to her parents.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
