Former Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw visited the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) offices and met with Rwanda’s U-20 national team on Tuesday.
Thiaw was received by FERWAFA’s executive committee, led by first vice-president in charge of administration and finance, Me Claudine Gasarabwe, who is currently serving as acting president in the absence of president Shema Ngoga Fabrice.
He later met with the U-20 team, sharing his coaching experience and offering advice to the players and technical staff. Thiaw also praised Rwanda’s efforts to develop football.
The 45-year-old is in Rwanda to attend the SportsBiz Africa Forum, which will take place on September 10 and 11 under the theme, “The Nexus Between Sports and Business Towards Africa’s Development.”
Thiaw will be among the speakers at the forum, where he is expected to share his experience and contribute to discussions on the development and future of sport in Africa.
Thiaw began his coaching career in 2018 with Senegalese club ASC Niarry Tally before taking charge of Senegal’s home-based national team in 2022. He led the side to the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) title in Algeria.
He was appointed Senegal’s senior national team coach in December 2024, having previously served as Aliou Cissé’s assistant. He guided the Teranga Lions to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and led them to the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Thiaw was later replaced as Senegal head coach by Patrick Vieira.
