Rwanda National Police has returned 500,000 Rwandan francs to Hatangimana Jean de Dieu after the money was successfully reclaimed following a public appeal.
The money was officially handed over on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, by Police spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga. It had been lost along the Remera–Giporoso road in Gasabo District on April 23, 2026, before being found and handed in to Police.
Following the recovery, Police issued a public notice on April 27, 2026, urging the rightful owner to come forward and claim the money.
Hatangimana later identified himself and recovered the funds after verification procedures confirmed ownership.
Police said the process involved standard checks, including identity confirmation and verification questions, to ensure the money was returned to its legitimate owner.
Authorities noted that such recoveries are part of routine Police practice aimed at promoting integrity and public trust, encouraging citizens to report and surrender found property for safe keeping and eventual return to owners.
