President Paul Kagame attended the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), congratulating Senegal after they edged hosts Morocco 1–0 to lift the continental title.

The decisive match was played on Sunday night, January 18, 2026, at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. It was a closely fought contest between two African football heavyweights, settled by a dramatic late goal.

President Kagame watched the final alongside senior football officials, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and Rwanda’s State Minister for Sports, Rwego Ngarambe.

In a message posted on X after the match, President Kagame praised both finalists.

He congratulated the Lions of Teranga on a well-deserved AFCON victory, describing it as a proud achievement that reflects resilience, unity and excellence.

He also commended Morocco for a strong performance in a well-organised tournament and for their warm hospitality.

Senegal secured the title through a 93rd-minute strike by Pape Gueye, claiming their second AFCON crown after their maiden triumph in 2021.

The final was preceded by a colourful closing ceremony featuring international celebrities, including British actor Idris Elba and musician Akon.

Fans were also entertained by popular internet personality IShowSpeed, who energized the stadium while wearing AFCON 2025 branding emblazoned with a lion emblem.
