Rwandan President Paul Kagame has congratulated Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election, reaffirming the commitment to strengthen bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.

In a message shared on X on Sunday, 18 January 2026, President Kagame commended Museveni for his electoral victory and expressed hope for continued progress and stability in Uganda.

“I wish you and the people of Uganda success as you continue serving your country for the development and well-being of its citizens,” Kagame said.

The Rwandan leader also highlighted the importance of deepening cooperation, emphasizing that the new term presents an opportunity to enhance the partnership between Rwanda and Uganda.

“I look forward to building a stronger, more productive relationship between our nations,” he added.

Uganda’s Electoral Commission officially confirmed on 16 January 2026 that Museveni, leader of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), had won the presidential election with 71.65% of the vote. Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, came second with 24.7%.

Museveni, already in office, has commenced a new five-year term, set to run until 2031, signaling continuity in Uganda’s political leadership.
