On Friday, January 30, 2026, President Paul Kagame held private talks with Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, Prime Minister of Togo and African Union mediator on the security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Gnassingbé arrived in Rwanda on the night of January 29. Following their discussions, the leaders met with the AU-appointed Panel of Eminent African Leaders, composed of former heads of state, including Nigeria’s Olusegun Obasanjo, Ethiopia’s Sahle-Work Zewde, Botswana’s Festus Mogae, and Central African Republic’s Catherine Samba-Panza.
The talks focused on security in eastern DRC, ongoing diplomatic initiatives, and regional and international mediation efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region.
