Rayon Sports began its post-CECAFA Kagame Cup preparations on a high note after defeating Kenya’s Mathare United 3-0 in a friendly match at Kigali Pelé Stadium on Sunday, August 16, 2026.

The victory provided another boost for the reigning CECAFA Kagame Cup champions as they continue preparations for the 2026/27 season and their upcoming CAF Confederation Cup campaign. The result is also consistent with reports of the match confirming a 3-0 win for Rayon Sports.

Boris Gbenou opened the scoring in the 37th minute after receiving a pass from Ndayishimiye Didier.

Iradukunda Elie Tatou doubled the advantage in the 83rd minute with a goal directly from a corner before Muhoza Daniel completed the victory four minutes later.

The goals were particularly significant for Gbenou and Iradukunda, who scored their first goals for Rayon Sports. Muhoza, meanwhile, took his tally for the club to three goals.

The friendly was organised as part of Rayon Sports’ celebrations following its recent CECAFA Kagame Cup triumph over Kenya’s Gor Mahia. The trophy was displayed at the stadium, giving supporters an opportunity to celebrate the club’s latest regional success.

Rayon Sports coach Haringingo Francis Christian used the match to give playing time to several players who do not regularly feature in the starting lineup.

Goalkeeper Mugisha Yves, captain Nshimimana Fabrice, Ndayishimiye Didier, Matumona Wakonda, Nisingizwe Christian, Nkundimana Fabio, Tambwe Gloire Ngongo, Boris Gbenou, Hakizimana Zuberi and Nizeyimana Mubarah were among those given starting roles.

Nshuti Didier was the only regular starter included in the lineup.

Despite the changes, Rayon Sports controlled the game and limited Mathare United to few meaningful opportunities in front of goal.

The match was Mathare United’s second friendly against a Rwandan club during its pre-season stay in the country. The Kenyan side had previously lost 1-0 to APR FC.

Mathare United is using its time in Rwanda to prepare for the 2026/27 season through a series of friendly matches against local clubs.

For Rayon Sports, the victory marked a positive return to action following its CECAFA Kagame Cup success and strengthened optimism ahead of the new season.

The club was without Ibrahim Djingarey and Ganijuru Ishimwe Elie, who is recovering from injury.

New signings Mokono Elie ‘Eldihno’ and Ivorian defender Mohamed Outtara are also yet to join the team in Rwanda, with their arrivals expected this week.

Rayon Sports will play its next friendly on Wednesday, August 19, when it faces Sudanese side Al-Ahli Wad Medani at Kigali Pelé Stadium.
