The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has honoured officers retiring from active duty after reaching retirement age or completing their service contracts, celebrating their contribution to the country’s security and transformation.

The retirement ceremony, the 14th of its kind, was held at RDF Headquarters in Kimihurura on Friday and was presided over by Defence Minister Juvenal Marizamunda on behalf of President Paul Kagame, the Commander-in-Chief of the RDF.

The event brought together RDF Chief of Defence Staff Gen. MK Mubarakh, senior military leaders, generals, officers and families of the retiring officers.

Marizamunda praised the retirees for their dedication and sacrifice in serving the nation, particularly their role in the liberation struggle, stopping the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and contributing to Rwanda’s reconstruction efforts.

He said their service had played a significant role in shaping RDF into a professional and respected military institution, recognised internationally through peacekeeping operations and security partnerships with other countries.

The minister also commended the spouses of the retiring officers for their support and resilience, noting their important role in maintaining families while their partners carried out national duties.

Gen. Mubarakh thanked the retirees for their patriotism, discipline and professionalism, highlighting their contribution to training and mentoring younger generations of soldiers.

He said RDF and the country would continue to benefit from the experience, knowledge and guidance of retired officers even after their departure from active service.

Representing the retirees, Maj Gen (Rtd) Emmanuel Bayingana expressed pride in RDF’s progress and transformation over the years.

He thanked President Kagame for his leadership in building a strong and united defence force, saying the retirees would continue to uphold RDF values of patriotism, integrity and commitment while contributing to Rwanda’s development.

The ceremony ended with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the retired officers in recognition of their distinguished service and commitment to the country.
