Rotary Club Kigali Golf has launched a fundraising campaign to raise $250,000 (over RWF 365 million) to procure advanced medical equipment for the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK), aimed at improving treatment for prostate cancer and other urological conditions in men.
The campaign has already begun with members of the club contributing an initial $27,000 (over RWF 39 million) as seed funding toward the target.
Rotary Club Kigali Golf President Julie Mutoni said the initiative reflects the club’s commitment to supporting healthcare delivery and improving access to specialized medical services in Rwanda.
“We aim to support CHUK in acquiring this machine. It will be the only one of its kind in the region, featuring advanced technology capable of treating a large number of patients,” she said.
The equipment is seen as a critical addition to Rwanda’s health system, as many patients requiring advanced urological surgery currently travel to neighboring countries, including Kenya, for treatment.
A specialist at CHUK, Dr. Emmanuel Muhawenimana, said the machine will significantly enhance service delivery in urology, given the high number of patients seeking care.
He noted that while some cases can be managed with medication, a substantial proportion of patients require surgical intervention.
“While some patients can be treated with medication, more than one-third require surgery to restore normal quality of life,” he said.
The Holmium Laser Medical System is a minimally invasive surgical technology used in the treatment of prostate enlargement, kidney stones, and other urological conditions affecting the male reproductive system.
Rotary Club Kigali Golf operates under Rotary International, a global humanitarian organization engaged in community development, disease prevention, and efforts to improve access to essential services such as healthcare.
