Rwanda’s U18 men’s national basketball team secured a convincing 74-38 victory over Basketball Vereniging Groningen (BVG) of the Netherlands in a friendly match as part of preparations for the FIBA U18 AfroBasket Zone V Qualifiers.
The game, played at Petit Stade in Remera, Kigali, saw the young Rwandan team demonstrate strong form ahead of the regional qualifiers scheduled for Cairo, Egypt, from July 23 to 29, 2026.
The qualifiers will determine teams that will earn places at the FIBA U18 AfroBasket tournament set to be held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, later this year.
Rwanda’s U18 men’s and women’s national teams are continuing intensive training ahead of the competition. In the women’s category, Rwanda will face Egypt and Tanzania, while the men’s tournament will feature Rwanda, South Sudan, Egypt, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Somalia.
Burundi, which had been expected to participate, withdrew from the qualifiers after its basketball federation cited financial challenges.
