Rwanda’s U23 national team have advanced to the second round of the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa U23 Cup of Nations after eliminating Sudan 4-1 on aggregate.

The Amavubi secured their place in the next round after drawing 1-1 with Sudan in the second leg played in Juba on October 6, 2026.

Rwanda had put themselves in a strong position in the first leg at Kigali Pele Stadium, where they won 3-0.

Sudan took the lead in the first half of the return leg, but Rwanda levelled in the 60th minute after a Sudanese player turned the ball into his own net.

Rwanda were reduced to 10 players after Muhoza Daniel was shown a red card in the first half. Despite playing a man down for much of the match, the team held on to secure qualification.

The result means Rwanda will face Cameroon in the second round, with the ties scheduled for November 2026.

The winner of the Rwanda-Cameroon tie will advance to the final qualifying round, where a place at the 2027 Africa U23 Cup of Nations in Egypt will be at stake.

The final qualifying round is scheduled for March 2027.

The 2027 U23 Africa Cup of Nations will also serve as a pathway to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States, with the four teams that reach the tournament’s semi-finals earning Olympic qualification.
