Madjaliwa Safari, a Rwandan national living in France, is scheduled to stand trial in Paris from November 17 to December 18, 2026, over genocide and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Rwanda in 1994.

According to French newspaper La Nouvelle République, Safari is suspected of involvement in the killings of Tutsis, particularly in the former prefectures of Gitarama and Butare, including at the Bigega roadblock, known as “Chez Premier”.

He was arrested in July 2023 following a four-year investigation that included five trips to Rwanda by investigators.

Safari denies the charges, saying that during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, he was caring for his injured father.

He arrived in France with his family in 2009 and was granted asylum in 2017. His trial is expected to last nearly a month as the court examines the allegations against him.
