Supreme Court President Domitilla Mukantaganzwa has reminded members of the Rwanda Bar Association that a thorough understanding of the law is essential for preparing cases effectively and delivering professional legal services.

The message was delivered during the General Assembly of the Rwanda Bar Association held at the Kigali Convention Center on Friday, December 19, 2025.

Justice Mukantaganzwa highlighted that, while collaboration between the judiciary, the Bar, and other legal institutions is strong, there is room for improvement in upholding professionalism in the legal sector. She emphasized that a case must be carefully prepared before appearing in court, rather than improvised on the spot.

She urged lawyers to fully understand their clients’ issues and to apply current laws, noting that some lawyers have previously relied on outdated legal provisions, which undermines justice.

The Chief Justice also stressed the importance of professional appearance and conduct in court. Lawyers should present themselves neatly, avoid arriving inebriated, unbathed, or without appropriate legal attire, she said, noting that proper preparation includes both legal knowledge and professional demeanor.

Justice Mukantaganzwa praised the Rwanda Bar Association for its contribution to improving access to legal services and advancing the quality of justice in the country.

Rwanda Bar Association President, Moïse Nkundabarashi, reported that in 2025, 181 candidates applied to join the legal profession, of whom 113 passed the qualifying exams and were admitted to practice law.
