The City of Toronto in Canada has officially designated April 7, 2026, as the International Day of Commemoration for the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, marking a significant step in global remembrance efforts.
The declaration was made by Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow during a commemoration event attended by members of the Rwandan community in Canada.
Mayor Chow said the decision was taken to honor the memory of victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and to express solidarity with survivors.
“I, Olivia Chow, Mayor of the City of Toronto, on behalf of Toronto City Council, officially declare April 7, 2026, as the International Day of Commemoration for the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda,” she announced.
The ceremony brought together Rwandan community leaders, including Alphonse Barikage, Chairperson of RCA Toronto, and Leo Kabalisa of Ibuka Canada, alongside members of the wider Rwandan diaspora.
Speakers reflected on the history of the genocide, stressing the importance of remembrance, truth-telling, and education for younger generations to ensure that “Never Again” is upheld.
Community representatives welcomed the declaration, describing it as a major milestone in honoring victims, supporting survivors, and strengthening international commitment to genocide prevention.
