Phanuel Sindayiheba, mayor of Rusizi district, has reassured residents, especially in Bugarama and border areas, that security is stable following reports of heavy gunfire in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Last week, fighting intensified in South Kivu province between the Congolese army and M23 rebel forces.
The clashes were severe in Walungu territory, including Kamanyola near the borders with Burundi and Rwanda, where civilians reported casualties and homes destroyed.
Residents in Bugarama also heard distant gunfire, raising concerns about their safety. The conflict prompted more than 1,000 Congolese refugees to seek temporary shelter in Rwanda.
Mayor Sindayiheba said no heavy gunfire has been reported near Bugarama recently and cross-border movement is normal.
He added that authorities are working with the Ministry of Disaster Management and the UN Refugee Agency to help refugees who wish to return safely.
Cross-border trade is functioning well, and security is intact. Some refugees have already expressed a desire to go back, and authorities are planning their return this week.
Some have already returned to the DRC via the Rusizi I border post toward Bukavu, while others remain in the temporary Nyarushishi camp.
Heavy fighting continues in Uvira, where AFC/M23 forces reportedly entered the city. Congolese government troops, together with allied forces from Burundi and local militias, are attempting to defend the area.
