The Nyagatare district council has approved the resignation of Gasana Stephen from his position as mayor of Nyagatare district.
According to information from the district leadership, Gasana stepped down to fully assume new national-level responsibilities following his recent appointment as deputy secretary-general of the RPF Inkotanyi, Rwanda’s ruling party.
Speaking on the matter, the president of the Nyagatare district council, Wilson Kabagamba, said arrangements are underway to ensure continuity in the district’s administration.
He noted that an interim mayor will be appointed in the coming days and will work with the remaining members of the district executive committee until a substantive leader is elected in accordance with the law.
Gasana was appointed deputy secretary-general of the RPF Inkotanyi, where he will serve as deputy to Christophe Bazivamo, the party’s secretary-general.
Before his resignation, Gasana was serving a five-year term as mayor of Nyagatare district, having been elected in November 2021. His departure comes before the completion of that mandate.
During his tenure, Gasana served in various leadership roles within public administration and was regarded as a trusted public servant, contributing to governance and development initiatives in the district.
Gasana Stephen holds a master’s degree in law from the University of Rwanda and has previously worked in different leadership positions within government structures.
