Valens Rwamukwaya, a veteran cameraman who dedicated nearly four decades to Rwanda’s broadcast media industry and retired from the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA), has died at the age of 70.
According to information obtained, Rwamukwaya passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026, following an illness.
Rwamukwaya served in the audiovisual media sector for 38 years, including 26 years at the national broadcaster, RBA, where he worked until his retirement in 2020.
Born in 1956 in Nyaruguru District, Southern Province, Rwamukwaya began his journalism career in 1982 at Burundi Television, where he was living in exile with his family. In 1984, he joined the team of journalists that helped establish the country’s national television station.
After returning to Rwanda in 1994, he continued his professional career at the former Office Rwandais d’Information (ORINFOR), which later became the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency.
During his 26-year tenure at RBA, Rwamukwaya was widely recognised for his work across a range of television programmes. Colleagues described him as a committed and passionate professional, known for his discipline and dedication to duty.
At his retirement in 2020, RBA management and staff paid tribute to his contribution to the growth and professionalism of broadcast journalism in Rwanda. His family said he would be remembered for his strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Rwamukwaya is survived by his wife and six children.
