As the first light of February 18, 2026, touched the skies over Rwanda and beyond, millions of Muslims began observing Ramadhan, the sacred month of fasting that has shaped Islamic life for centuries. It is a time when faith meets discipline, and personal devotion intertwines with acts of generosity.
For Muslims, Ramadhan is more than abstaining from food, drink, and intimacy from dawn until sunset. It is a period for spiritual renewal, self-restraint, and deep reflection.
The Prophet Muhammad described fasting as a “shield”, a practice that strengthens the soul, cultivates moral discipline, and guides believers toward ethical living. Muslims are called not only to fast physically but also to refrain from harmful speech, quarrels, and deceit.
Beyond personal piety, Ramadhan is a time to extend compassion to others. Communities come together to assist the poor, visit the sick, and support the vulnerable.
Fasting fosters empathy, helping believers experience the struggles of those less fortunate, and motivates charitable acts that resonate far beyond the confines of religious observance.
The significance of Ramadhan is rooted in history. It marks the month when the Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Jibril, laying the foundation for the Islamic faith. This revelation makes the month profoundly sacred, a period of reflection on divine guidance and moral responsibility.
Families gather at sunset for Iftar, breaking the daylong fast with communal meals, while local and international charity initiatives mobilize to ensure the needy are cared for. Even for those exempt from fasting—such as the elderly, the sick, or travelers, the spirit of the month encourages participation through acts of kindness and giving.
Across Rwanda and the world, Ramadhan is a time to reconnect with faith, embrace discipline, and strengthen community bonds. It is a reminder that devotion is measured not only in rituals but in actions, small and large that cultivate empathy, generosity, and a shared sense of humanity.
