Meteo Rwanda has issued a weather alert forecasting above-normal rainfall across the country between February 21 and 28, 2026, raising concerns over potential weather-related risks.

The national meteorological agency indicated that rainfall amounts during the final week of February are expected to exceed the long-term average for this period. The forecast signals heightened likelihood of heavy downpours in several parts of the country.

In a related advisory, the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) cautioned that the anticipated rains will be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, conditions that could trigger accidents, infrastructure damage and other hazards.

Authorities have called on residents to take preventive measures, including clearing drainage channels, inspecting homes for structural weaknesses and firmly securing rooftops against strong winds. Communities living in high-risk zones are particularly urged to remain alert and follow official safety guidance.

The warning comes as Rwanda continues to strengthen disaster preparedness efforts amid increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. Officials emphasised that early action and public cooperation will be critical in reducing potential losses during the forecasted heavy rains.
