MINEMA issues nationwide alert over heavy rains, lightning risks

The Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) has issued a fresh public safety advisory urging Rwandans and residents to take precautionary measures as heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms intensify across the country.

The ministry warned that failure to observe safety guidelines during lightning storms could result in serious injuries, property damage, or loss of life.

In its advisory, MINEMA stressed the importance of seeking shelter in safe buildings as soon as rainfall with lightning begins. Citizens were cautioned against taking refuge under trees, near communication towers, or close to metal fences — areas considered highly vulnerable during thunderstorms.

Residents were also advised to suspend outdoor activities during storms, avoid bathing in the rain, refrain from using mobile phones during lightning strikes, and unplug electrical appliances to reduce the risk of electrocution and equipment damage.

The alert follows a recent forecast by Meteo Rwanda indicating that the third ten-day period of February 2026 will experience above-average rainfall nationwide.

Meteo Rwanda projected that between February 21 and 28, rainfall levels across much of the country will exceed seasonal norms, increasing the likelihood of thunderstorms and related hazards.

With the rainy season gaining intensity, authorities are calling for heightened vigilance and strict adherence to safety guidance to prevent avoidable tragedies.
