Kigali, February 24, 2026 – The Government of Rwanda has signed a $78.5 million agreement with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to strengthen the country’s agriculture and livestock sectors. The ceremony was held in Kigali, with Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Yusuf Murangwa representing Rwanda.
The funding will support hillside irrigation in Kayonza and enhance the livestock value chain, aiming to increase productivity, improve food security, and raise rural household incomes. The project will also help farmers adapt to climate change and build long-term resilience.
Rwanda’s Ministry of Finance described the agreement as a significant achievement for both farmers and the nation. IFAD, a UN-affiliated organization established in 1977, has been working with Rwanda since 1980, investing over $791 million in 21 projects benefiting more than 1.5 million households. Its 2019–2024 strategy prioritizes productivity, climate-smart agriculture, nutrition, and market access, with special focus on women, youth, and vulnerable communities.
