President Paul Kagame has praised Gianni Infantino for his leadership in strengthening Rwanda’s football development through the FIFA Forward programme, citing major investments in infrastructure and youth talent systems.
In a message shared on FIFA’s official social media platforms, President Kagame highlighted the tangible gains Rwanda has registered under the global football body’s development initiative, expressing appreciation for Infantino’s continued support.
“FIFA Forward supported the construction of our football federation’s hotel. In different districts, the programme is financing the construction of stadiums that meet FIFA standards,” Kagame noted.
He emphasized that access to high-quality infrastructure is essential for player development, saying modern facilities enable athletes to train effectively and compete at higher levels. According to the President, sustained investment in infrastructure lays the foundation for long-term competitiveness.
Globally, FIFA Forward has supported more than 200 member associations over the past decade, implementing over 2,000 development projects worth more than $5 billion.
In 2026, under FIFA Forward 3.0, Rwanda is set to receive $1.55 million (over Rwf2 billion) in addition to $1.2 million (approximately Rwf1.8 billion) to support projects implemented by the Rwanda Football Federation, FERWAFA. The funds will contribute to the construction of district stadiums in Rusizi, Rutsiro, Gicumbi and Gasabo, further decentralizing access to professional-standard facilities.
Beyond infrastructure, FIFA will allocate more than Rwf439.5 million through its Talent Development Scheme (TDS) aimed at nurturing young footballers and strengthening grassroots systems. Rwanda will also receive Rwf1 billion to host the upcoming FIFA Series friendly matches, which will bring together eight national teams starting March 26, 2026.
Infantino recently visited Kigali, where he joined President Kagame in donating footballs to 220 young players during the “FIFA Football Festival” held at Stade Amahoro on December 26, 2025. During the event, the FIFA President commended Rwanda for investing in modern sports infrastructure, describing Stade Amahoro as among the most advanced stadiums on the African continent.
The growing scale of FIFA investment underscores Rwanda’s rising profile in global football development, positioning the country as an emerging hub for sports infrastructure, youth talent cultivation and international competitions.
