At least 28 people have died, and more than 400 others have been hospitalized in Bugesera District after consuming substandard or counterfeit alcohol, local police authorities report.

The problem has been particularly acute in Ngeruka Sector, where residents have been affected by the consumption of unsafe alcoholic beverages. The incidents came to light during a community cleanup event (umuganda) concluding February, when police officials revealed the full scale of the crisis.

In February alone, police say 28 people lost their lives after drinking these illicit products, while hundreds more required medical attention.

The Bugesera District Police Commander in charge of operations, SSP Emerthe Uwitonze, urged residents to avoid consuming illegal alcohol, warning that such drinks can have deadly consequences.

“These illicit products have created a serious public health problem. The numbers show that some have died, while others have suffered blindness or other illnesses caused by these drinks,” he said. “This is not just a personal risk—it is a public health issue that demands everyone’s vigilance.”

SSP Uwitonze warned that illegal alcohol can cause severe illness, disability, or death. “Before drinking, think about your health, your family, and your future. Avoid alcohol that is not produced in licensed facilities, lacks proper labeling, or is sold in secret.”

He also called on producers and sellers of illicit alcohol to cease operations, noting that manufacturing or selling substandard alcohol is a criminal offense. “Putting profit above people’s lives is a dangerous choice and can lead to imprisonment or heavy fines. If you want to operate a business in alcohol, do it legally and safely, following quality standards,” he added.

Authorities are encouraging residents to report illegal alcohol trade. “Every citizen has a responsibility to protect their own life and the lives of others. If you are aware of or hear about illicit alcohol sales, report it immediately to local authorities or security agencies,” SSP Uwitonze said.

The Bugesera police have vowed to intensify inspections and enforce regulations to prevent further tragedies, highlighting the need for community cooperation in curbing the spread of unsafe alcohol.
