Bugesera: RDF commander issues tough warning to Nyakondo theft suspects

The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) commander in Bugesera District, Lt Col Augustin Murigande, has issued a strong warning to individuals suspected of orchestrating theft in Nyakondo village, Kanzenze Cell, Ntarama Sector, accusing them of destabilising security in the area.

The warning was delivered on February 28, 2026, during the monthly community work (Umuganda) that closed the month of February, attended by local leaders and residents.

Lt Col Murigande said Nyakondo has increasingly been linked to theft cases not only within Ntarama but also in neighbouring sectors of Mayange and Kamabuye, where suspects arrested for stealing were reportedly traced back to the village.

“Everyone from Nyakondo has a responsibility to help restore order. If there is a so-called ‘school’ training thieves there, we will dismantle it,” he said, drawing applause from residents.

He stressed that security organs would no longer tolerate repeat offences.

“I will not simply arrest you and release you. Those who persist in criminal acts will face serious consequences,” he warned.

Local leaders say theft in the area has escalated to the extent that some residents now carry clubs for self-defence.

Patrick Rwasa, Executive Secretary of Ntarama Sector, confirmed that authorities are tracking down suspected perpetrators involved in violence and theft.

He linked several incidents to individuals returning from mining activities, particularly in the evenings after being paid.

“Sometimes, after receiving their wages, some get intoxicated and cause disturbances. But we handle these issues on a daily basis, engage all community groups, and continue to prioritise security. We assure residents that the situation is being addressed,” Rwasa said.

Nyakondo is a bustling trading centre shared by three villages, including Rugarama and Cyugaro, with a mix of small-scale businesses and low-cost housing. While its accessibility has supported commerce, officials say it has also provided cover for individuals involved in theft and other criminal activities.

Security authorities have called on residents to cooperate and report suspicious behaviour as part of broader efforts to safeguard public safety in Bugesera.
