The Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) of the Rwanda National Police operating in Kigali has arrested a 24-year-old man found in possession of 1,000 rolls of cannabis.

The suspect was apprehended on March 3, 2026, in Kamuyinga Village, Karembure Cell, Gahanga Sector, Kicukiro District.

Police confirmed that a case file has been prepared and forwarded to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) for further investigation and prosecution.

The Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, CIP Wellars Gahonzire, commended residents who provided information that led to the arrest of the suspect.

He urged the public to continue sharing timely information about individuals involved in drug trafficking, noting that such activities pose a serious threat to public health and community safety.

Gahonzire also warned those engaged in the sale and distribution of narcotics to abandon the trade.

“Those involved in the sale or consumption of illegal drugs should stop. Whatever methods they use are known. They are advised to seek alternative lawful employment because drug trafficking will not save them—it will ultimately destroy their future,” he said.

Article 263 of Rwanda’s Penal Code provides that any person who produces, cultivates, processes, transports, stores, distributes or sells narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances unlawfully commits an offence.

Upon conviction, offenders face life imprisonment and a fine ranging from Rwf20 million to Rwf30 million for trafficking in hard drugs.
