What is Global Citizen and Move Afrika?
Founded in 2008, Global Citizen is an international advocacy organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty around the world. The organization mobilizes citizens, governments, corporations and public figures to take action against poverty and inequality.
Global Citizen promotes its mission through a variety of initiatives, including awareness campaigns, policy advocacy and large-scale entertainment events that bring together world leaders, celebrities and development partners to raise support for poverty eradication.
Among these initiatives is the Move Afrika concert series held in different African countries. The festival blends entertainment with development advocacy, aiming to promote social progress while strengthening Africa’s creative economy.
The concerts have also generated employment opportunities for local communities wherever they are hosted. When Move Afrika debuted in Kigali in 2023, the event created more than 1,000 jobs for local workers.
Since its launch in 2023, the Move Afrika concerts held in Kigali and Lagos have collectively created more than 2,500 jobs, reflecting the initiative’s broader impact beyond entertainment by contributing to local economic activity and livelihoods.
