The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) have agreed on strengthened measures to enhance security along their shared border, including joint patrols, improved intelligence sharing and intensified community sensitisation against illegal activities.

The commitments were reached at the conclusion of the 15th bilateral meeting of border commanders, held in Karagwe District, Tanzania, from March 24 to 26.

The three-day meeting brought together commanders from the RDF 5th Infantry Division and the TPDF 202 Brigade, both responsible for operations along the Rwanda–Tanzania border, to review progress and address persistent cross-border threats.

Co-chaired by Brig. Gen. Gabriel Elias Kwiligwa of the TPDF and Maj. Gen. Ruki Karusisi of the RDF, the meeting assessed implementation of previous resolutions agreed in December 2025 and examined ongoing challenges, including smuggling, drug trafficking, illegal fishing and unauthorized border crossings.

Both sides agreed to scale up joint operations and deepen collaboration with border communities to improve surveillance and curb illegal activities.

They also endorsed new initiatives, including friendly sports engagements between the two forces and closer coordination with local authorities to encourage the use of official border posts.

As part of efforts to regulate movement, the meeting recommended the establishment of an official border crossing between Kibale in Kayonza District and Bweranyange in Karagwe District.

Speaking at the closing session, Brig. Gen. Kwiligwa praised the strong cooperation between the two forces, noting that sustained collaboration will enhance peace, security and professionalism.

Maj. Gen. Karusisi commended the TPDF for hosting the meeting and reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to joint efforts aimed at safeguarding the border.

He emphasized that the agreed measures will reinforce operational coordination, particularly through joint activities and timely intelligence exchange.
