MPs demand urgent plan to curb rainwater damage to infrastructure

Share with Others

The Chamber of Deputies has urged the Prime Minister to present a concrete plan within six months to manage rainwater, aiming to protect roads, bridges, and citizens’ property.

During a detailed review conducted in February 2025, the Supreme Audit Institution highlighted that unmanaged rainwater is destroying urban roads and bridges, disrupting trade, and causing financial losses to citizens.

The Economic and Trade Committee, led by Theogene Munyangeyo, said the country loses significantly each year due to infrastructure damage caused by rainwater. Current systems capture only 0.25% of the estimated 34 billion cubic meters of annual rainfall, leaving the majority uncontrolled.

MPs also called on the Ministry of Infrastructure to improve oversight of youth groups maintaining roads and bridges, emphasizing the need for a sustainable, nationwide solution to prevent future losses and facilitate smoother trade between districts.
