The Chairperson of the Yad Vashem Council, Dani Dayan, has emphasized that Rwandans and Israelis share a crucial responsibility to fight genocide wherever it occurs and to support those at risk.
Speaking at an international conference on genocide prevention, held alongside the 30th anniversary of IBUKA, Dayan highlighted the shared histories of Rwanda and Israel as nations that have endured genocide. He noted that these experiences give both countries a unique role in raising global awareness and preventing future atrocities.
Recalling a 2005 initiative organized at the request of Yolande Mukagasana, Dayan described a historic gathering of Holocaust survivors and survivors of the Rwandan Genocide. The forum offered a rare space to share testimonies, exchange lessons, and discuss pathways for life after unimaginable trauma.
“Remembrance is not a passive act; it is a struggle, a continuous duty,” Dayan said, underlining that genocide leaves deep scars but also imposes a lasting responsibility to ensure it never happens again.
The conference sent a powerful message to the global community: continue to collaborate in combating genocide, reject hate and division, support survivors, and build a world rooted in peace, justice, and reconciliation.
