The City of Kigali has announced the introduction of dedicated bus lanes on selected roads during peak hours in a bid to improve public transport flow and reduce traffic congestion.
According to a statement issued on April 23, 2026, the new measures will take effect on Friday, April 24, and will reserve specific road sections for public buses and priority vehicles during peak commuting times.
The designated hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the morning and from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the evening. Outside these periods, the roads will remain open to all vehicles as usual, with traffic signage to guide motorists.
The pilot corridors include key routes such as Kigali City Roundabout–Peyaje via Kanogo, Rwandex and Sonatube to Giporoso and Cyamitsingi; Sonatube–Kicukiro Centre–Nyanza Bus Park; Downtown–former 1930 prison area–Nyabugogo; and Hotel Gloria–Nyarugenge Market–City Plaza.
The City of Kigali has urged private motorists using these routes to plan ahead by taking alternative roads, traveling outside peak hours, or waiting until the bus lane restrictions are lifted.
Authorities also encouraged residents to prioritize public transport where possible, noting that the measure is intended to improve commuter efficiency and reduce delays during rush hours.
The initiative comes as part of broader efforts to strengthen urban mobility and promote the use of public transport amid rising fuel costs.
Recent increases in global petroleum prices—linked in part to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East affecting key supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz—have pushed fuel prices higher in Rwanda.
Officials have urged residents to adapt to more efficient transport habits as fuel prices continue to rise.
