The Office of the Auditor General has confirmed the recovery of Rwf 1.47 billion that had been improperly spent across various government institutions, according to its latest audit report for the 2025/2026 fiscal year.
The report was presented to both chambers of Parliament on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
Auditor General Alexis Kamuhire said the recovered funds were linked to unjustified expenditures, including payments for unnecessary services and other irregular transactions that did not meet public finance standards.
Institutions involved in the recovery process include the Rwanda Housing Authority, the Water and Sanitation Corporation, Kirehe District, and a project under the Rwanda Biomedical Centre, among others.
Kamuhire noted continued improvement in public financial management, crediting strengthened cooperation between oversight bodies and government institutions.
The report shows that 96% of public spending was audited during the year ending June 30, 2025. Of the entities assessed, 97% received clean audit opinions, up from 94% the previous year.
Compliance with legal and regulatory requirements also improved to 83%, up from 75%, while adherence to principles of proper public resource management rose to 79% from 66%, reflecting ongoing progress in financial accountability across the public sector.
