A delegation from the Nigerian Defence Research Institute is in Rwanda on a one-week study visit focused on the relationship between ethnically driven armed groups, competition over natural resources, and their impact on national security.

During the visit, the delegation held discussions at the Ministry of Defence and the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Headquarters, where they were received by the Director General for International Military Cooperation at the Ministry of Defence, Brigadier General Patrick Karuretwa.

The briefing centered on the theme “Ethnically driven armed groups, competition over natural resources and their impact on national security,” with Rwanda sharing its experience in addressing complex security challenges and strengthening national resilience.

The study tour aims to enhance participants’ understanding of the root causes of insecurity, particularly conflicts linked to identity-based armed groups and resource competition, while also exposing them to Rwanda’s policy frameworks and institutional responses to conflict prevention and management.

Head of delegation Halima Zanna commended the insights gained during the engagement, saying the visit would contribute to improved understanding of security governance, conflict prevention, and peacebuilding strategies.

The visit highlights growing cooperation between Rwanda and Nigeria in security research and training, as well as broader efforts to strengthen regional collaboration in addressing evolving security threats.
