Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Vincent Biruta has represented President Paul Kagame at celebrations marking the 66th anniversary of Madagascar’s independence.
Rwanda extended congratulations to the Government and people of Madagascar, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.
On the sidelines of the celebrations, Minister Biruta held talks with Madagascar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alice N’DIAYE, during which both sides reviewed the status of existing cooperation and explored new areas of partnership.
The discussions focused on strengthening the legal and institutional framework guiding bilateral cooperation, with an emphasis on expanding mutually beneficial initiatives in key development sectors.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening relations built on shared interests and people-centred cooperation.
Rwanda and Madagascar enjoy long-standing relations that were further reinforced during a state visit by Malagasy President Andry Rajoelina to Rwanda in 2023.
During that visit, President Paul Kagame and President Rajoelina agreed to expand cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, tourism, technology, and private sector development, resulting in the signing of several economic cooperation agreements.
In 2024, bilateral relations were further strengthened when Rwanda’s Ambassador to Madagascar presented credentials to President Rajoelina, formally accrediting him as Rwanda’s representative in the country.
While in Madagascar, Minister Biruta also met members of the Rwandan community living there, reaffirming government commitment to engaging and supporting Rwandans in the diaspora.
