WASAC introduces water rationing as dry season reduces supply

The Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC Group) has introduced a water rationing system following a seasonal drop in water production, urging consumers to use water sparingly and store sufficient reserves during the dry period.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, WASAC said the measure was necessary due to reduced water availability, warning that some areas may experience intermittent shortages.

“We encourage our customers to use water efficiently, and especially to find ways of storing water for use during periods when supply is unavailable in their areas,” the statement read.

The rationing plan mainly affects parts of Kigali and surrounding districts, including Kicukiro, Gasabo, Nyarugenge, Bugesera, Kamonyi and Rwamagana.

The measures took effect on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

WASAC also reminded consumers using public water points that a jerrycan of water remains priced at Rwf20, warning against any unauthorized price increases during the rationing period.
