A total of 185 Rwandan police officers deployed under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been decorated with UN service medals in recognition of their dedication and professionalism during their peacekeeping duties.

The medal ceremony, held on Saturday, 6 December 2025, at the Rwandan Police contingent base in Juba, was presided over by Mussa Gasama, the head of the United Nations Police (UNPOL) in South Sudan.

The medals honour the officers’ outstanding commitment during the 11 months they have served in protecting civilians and supporting peace and stability efforts across South Sudan.

Gasama praised the Rwandan officers for their discipline, resilience, and impactful contribution to safeguarding civilians and strengthening the capacity of the South Sudan National Police Service.

“These medals are a symbol of gratitude for the sacrifice and professionalism each one of you has demonstrated. Your work has made a difference in protecting civilians and supporting peace and security in this country,” Gasama said.

He added that even after completing their deployment, the medals would remain a lasting reminder and motivation for them to continue upholding excellence wherever they serve.

ACP Corneille Murigo, the contingent commander of the Rwandan Police in South Sudan, thanked all guests who attended the ceremony and commended the decorated officers for their exemplary service throughout the mission.

The decorated contingent (RWAFPU3-7), largely composed of female officers and led by SSP Donatha Nyinawumuntu, is one of Rwanda’s two Formed Police Units currently deployed in South Sudan.

ACP Murigo also appreciated UNMISS for its constant support, which enables the contingent to effectively fulfil its mandate. He highlighted the officers’ strong commitment to protecting civilians, promoting community welfare, and combating threats to human rights, despite the challenges they encounter.

He expressed gratitude to the UN leadership, all security partners under UNMISS, and the local communities for the cooperation that continues to strengthen peacekeeping work in the country.

The 185 officers have completed 11 months of service in Juba. Rwanda’s police presence in South Sudan includes two Formed Police Units, as well as 185 Individual Police Officers (IPOs), among them 95 women and 90 men.
