Three people from Maraba Sector in Huye District are reported dead after consuming contaminated local brew (ikigage), while two others were hospitalized and later discharged.
The incident occurred in Shyinga Village, Shanga Cell. Authorities say the brew may have been prepared under unsafe conditions.
CIP Kamanzi Hassan, Police Spokesperson for the Southern Province, confirmed that one suspect involved in producing the drink has been arrested and handed over to the prosecution for endangering public health.
The police extended condolences to the families of the deceased and warned that producing or selling unsafe alcoholic beverages carries serious legal consequences. Convictions can result in imprisonment of three to five years.
Rwanda National Police urges citizens to avoid consuming or trading unsafe alcohol and to report any illegal brewing activities immediately.
