Skytrax has ranked Kigali International Airport third best in its region and eighth across Africa in its 2026 global airport rankings, reinforcing Rwanda’s growing reputation in aviation service excellence.
The report, released on March 19, assesses airports based on key performance indicators including infrastructure, cleanliness, security, and quality of passenger services. Kigali International Airport stood out for its efficiency, hospitality, and overall traveler experience.
The airport earned strong ratings for services such as food and beverage offerings, as well as its calm and secure environment. It also performed highly in passenger convenience, particularly in minimizing walking distances, facilitating communication, and providing multilingual support through skilled staff.
Skytrax notes that despite its relatively small size, Kigali International Airport continues to register increasing passenger traffic, largely driven by the expansion of RwandAir and its growing route network.
Following renovations completed in 2022, the airport enhanced its operational capacity and can now accommodate more than 50 aircraft at a time, further strengthening its position as a regional hub.
However, the report highlights areas for improvement, including high prices of food and retail items within the airport, and recommends expanding commercial outlets to offer passengers more choices.
Across the continent, Cape Town International Airport ranked as Africa’s best airport, recognized for its advanced infrastructure, high-quality services, and appeal to both tourists and premium travelers. It remains the only airport in Africa awarded a four-star rating.
O. R. Tambo International Airport placed second, noted for its role as a major global transit hub handling the highest passenger volumes while maintaining strong service delivery standards.
Marrakesh Menara Airport ranked third in Africa, handling over nine million passengers annually and earning praise for its modern design and passenger-friendly environment. It serves as a key hub for airlines including Royal Air Maroc and Transavia France.
Other airports featured in Africa’s top ten include King Shaka International Airport, Mohammed V International Airport, Cairo International Airport, and Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.
