The Presbyterian Church of Rwanda (ADEPR) has, for the first time in its 85-year history, ordained female pastors to take on leadership roles within the church.

A cohort of 15 newly ordained pastors was consecrated on December 9, 2025, during a ceremony held at the Huye Assembly Hall, marking a landmark moment in the church’s journey.

Preparations began on November 9, 2025, when parishes across the country nominated candidates for blessing and ordination.

Church authorities report that women constitute 33 percent of the total candidates, totaling 160 pastors. The ordination process is set to continue through December 18, 2025.

ADEPR General Superintendent, Pastor Isaie Ndayizeye, emphasized that the church remains committed to appointing capable leaders to advance its mission and strengthen the Christian community.

He said that as the church pursues its 2050 vision, the goal is to expand its reach, increase the number of believers, and cultivate committed disciples.

On the ordination of women, Pastor Ndayizeye clarified that, while female pastors had not been appointed before, church doctrine never prohibited it.

After extensive dialogue, church leaders concluded that the Bible does not forbid ordaining women, and this step is expected to bring fresh blessings and vitality to the church.

The Huye ceremony, involving 18 parishes, saw a total of 44 pastors ordained, including 29 men and 15 women.

Founded more than eight decades ago, ADEPR has steadily grown, expanding its influence through evangelism, healthcare, education, and social outreach. Today, it operates over 3,000 congregations across Rwanda.
