AFC/M23 accuses Congo forces of drone attacks on Minembwe civilians

The AFC/M23 coalition has accused the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) of carrying out drone strikes that killed civilians and destroyed property in Minembwe, South Kivu.

In a statement released Sunday, March 22, 2026, AFC/M23 said FARDC troops, alongside allied militias, launched attacks Saturday night in heavily populated areas of Kalingi and the center of Minembwe. The strikes reportedly killed civilians, forced families to flee, and caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.

The group described the use of drones in civilian areas as an escalation of the conflict, aimed at intimidating residents and violating their right to live safely.

FARDC has not responded to the latest allegations. Previously, the Congolese military has denied targeting civilians, asserting that its operations focus on armed groups threatening national security.

The report adds to growing international concern over the use of advanced military technology in eastern Congo. Recently, the United States urged all parties to halt lethal drone operations after attacks in Goma killed a UNICEF worker and other civilians.

Eastern Congo has experienced more than 20 years of armed conflict, with multiple militias pursuing political, economic, and security objectives. Residents in Minembwe and surrounding areas continue to call for lasting peace and reliable protection, even as drone strikes and modern weaponry increase risks to civilians.
