Ambassador Bazivamo Christophe was appointed as the new Secretary General of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) during the party’s 17th National Congress, held on Friday, December 19, 2025.
The congress saw the RPF restructure its leadership and introduce new positions, including a Second Vice President and a Deputy Secretary General.
Stephen Gasana Karasanyi, the current Mayor of Nyagatare District, was named Deputy to Ambassador Bazivamo. Consolée Uwimana retained her position as First Vice President, while Kayisire Marie Solange was appointed Second Vice President.
The congress was attended by President Paul Kagame, who serves as Chairman of the RPF, along with First Lady Jeannette Kagame. Over 2,200 party members gathered at the party’s headquarters in Rusororo to discuss matters related to Rwanda’s development.
The 16th National Congress of the party coincided with the 35th anniversary of the RPF. Discussions at that congress had focused on national and continental issues, emphasizing Africa’s need for self-determination in global decision-making processes.
Concerns were raised that African countries are often treated as passive participants in international decisions rather than active agents shaping outcomes.
During the 17th congress, members highlighted strategies necessary to achieve sustainable development across Africa. Party leaders stressed the importance of understanding local and continental needs, taking ownership of decisions, and implementing agreed-upon policies effectively.
